Transportation cards

When using public transportation in large cities in Korea, it is convenient to use the T-card. With a single T-card, it is possible to use all city buses, local neighborhood buses known as “maeul bus,” and subways, with the added benefit of discounted fares, compared to paying cash.

  • Where to purchase a T-card: subway stations, Busan Bank, T-card kiosks next to bus stops.
  • Depending on the type of card, the initial purchase price for the card itself is 2,000-6,000 won. It can be recharged with additional value whenever necessary.
  • When transferring between city buses, subway, and local neighborhood buses, the T-card provides a discount on the cost of the transfer.

Information on transfers

What is transfer mean?

"Transfer" refers to changing from one transportation unit to another (e.g., city bus, subway line, or the local neighborhood bus known as "maeul bus"), either from one category of transport to another, or from one bus line to another.

What is the transfer (fare) discount system?

This refers to an automated system providing discounted fares for city buses, local neighborhood buses, or subway lines, when riders are transferring from another transportation unit.

Overview of transfer (fare) discount system
  • Targets: City bus ↔ Subway ↔ Local neighborhood bus
  • Method: When transferring from one transportation unit to another within 30 minutes of swiping your card and disembarking from the previous transportation, a fare discount benefit is applied (up to two transfers are eligible for the discount on one journey, i.e., three units of transportation)
  • Public bus

Get off Bus : Transfer to transportation within 30minutes
  • Subway

Get off Subway : Transfer to transportation within 30minutes
  • Local shuttle bus
Information on how fares are applied
  • Standard: Among the transportation modes used by a rider, the highest fare is applied as the base rate.
  • Discount fare: On top of the base rate, discounted transfer fares are applied accordingly.
  • Transfer fare: When embarking on another transportation unit, the fare is collected only once (adults 200 won, teens 130 won, children 50 won)
Example of fare applied for an adult rider who is transferring
    • City bus ⇔ City bus ⇔ City bus: total 950 won
      (base rate 950 won ⇔ transfer 0 won + discount 0 won ⇔ transfer 0 won + discount 0 won)
    • Local neighborhood bus ⇔ Local neighborhood bus ⇔ City bus: total 1,150 won
      (base rate 800 won ⇔ transfer 0 won + discount 0 won ⇔ transfer 200 won + discount 150 won)
    • Local neighborhood bus ⇔ City bus ⇔ Subway: total 1,190 won
      (base rate 800 won ⇔ transfer 200 won + discount 150 won ⇔ transfer 0 won + discount 40 won)
  • <Situations when the fare discount does not apply>
  • When transferring within the same line, there is no fare discount benefit.
  • When transferring among subway lines, the fare discount applies only when transferring from one subway platform to another without exiting the system.
  • When one card is used to pay for two or more passengers on a city bus, only one passenger can receive the transfer fare discount benefit.
  • If you forget to swipe your card when exiting a bus, no transfer fare discount can be applied when you enter the next transportation unit.
  • No transfer fare discount applies when paying with cash.
  • No transfer fare discount applies when a card for one passenger type is used to pay the fare of a different passenger type, as in a regular adult card being used to pay a teen's fare.
  • The transfer fare discount can be applied only twice per journey, so no fare discount applies on the third transfer (i.e., getting on a fourth transportation unit).
  • No transfer fare discount benefit applies when the transfer to the next transportation unit occurs more than 30 minutes after disembarking from the previous transportation unit.

City buses

Along with subway, this is the most widely used transportation method.

  • Kinds of city buses: regular bus, local neighborhood bus, express bus/seat bus, night bus Bus route maps and audio announcements of stops are available on buses, but the information is in Korean. So, for foreigners not able to understand Korean well, it is recommended to prepare a note showing your destination and/or to ask for assistance from Koreans who speak your language.

  • Bus fare can be paid either by T-card or cash. A discount applies when paying with a T-card.
